The Rex R. Perschbacher Scholarship has been established at the UC Davis School of Law to ensure legal education is accessible to students with an economic need, especially those who are the first in their family to attend law school. Dean Perschbacher also wishes to encourage the study of philosophy and classics as pathways to legal education and careers in the law.
Dean Perschbacher hopes that this scholarship will help further the mission of UC Davis School of Law by "building a great law school, a truly public law school, a place of promise for all students, one that welcomes everyone based on their intelligence and ability, and that retains its mission of producing ethical lawyers committed to serving their communities, the state, the nation, and the world."
Increased tuition and fees at the University of California Law Schools, including UC Davis, have created barriers to those who come from limited economic means dreaming of a legal career. The impact is particularly devastating to those who are the first in their family to attend law school. They are more likely to lack the resources to attend law school without substantial financial aid, and lack the experience of dealing with institutions of higher education to seek all the support and advice that may be available. Such support and advice is all the more important for students dealing with the alternatives of skipping law school or facing potentially overwhelming debt.
The Rex R. Perschbacher Scholarship will help break this barrier. Students will be able come to UC Davis School of Law knowing their backgrounds will not dictate their futures. The Law School and legal communities will instead be enriched by their diverse life experiences.
